By Mark Tyler:
As the years click by on this journey we call aircraft maintenance, I find that some things bother me more now than they used to. At the top of that list? A bad attitude. I consider myself patient, but when someone displays an attitude of not caring, that’s when I have to step in and try to correct the ship.
Here’s a gold nugget I’ve learned over 44 years. Just two words, but a lifetime of wisdom stands behind them: Everything matters.
Yes, everything!
It matters how leaders set the standards. It matters in attention to detail, culture and attitude, perspective, and training. Over the years, I’ve performed final walk-arounds only to find cotter pins missing, oil levels low, and cowlings left open—all while a pilot stood ready to fly without even pre-flighting the aircraft.
Don’t get me wrong—most people in this industry are diligent and deeply care about their work. But beware of distractions and complacency. Remember, we are always teaching through our work ethic, our attitude, our decisions, and the integrity we display. People are watching. That’s why we must establish and maintain a standard—the standard.
So, what is your standard? What do you accept, and what are your non-negotiables? I recently wrote out my own Standard of Expectations—a list I’ll share soon.
Perspective also matters. When I served in the U.S. Air Force, every time I passed through the guarded checkpoint, I made it a point to pause in gratitude. I’d say to myself, or sometimes out loud: “Thank you that I get to do this.” I knew that one day it would end, and when it did, I wanted no regrets.
The same is true in civilian aviation. We get to do this work. None of us are required to—it’s a privilege. That perspective of gratitude keeps us aligned with what really matters.
Because everything matters. Attitude matters. Competency matters. Relationships matter. And above all—Excellence matters.
