Airport transfers represent one of the clearest near-term applications for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The demand profile is bidirectional, the time savings are significant, and the use case aligns with how ground transportation already functions in every major metropolitan area. I've spent ten years on this airspace integration problem—first at NASA, then at Uber Elevate, and now at Joby—and the question has never been whether eVTOL aircraft can operate at commercial airports. The question has been how to demonstrate it to the satisfaction of the FAA, airport authorities, and air traffic control professionals who will ultimately make it work.

On July 26, 2024, at 10:40 Central Daylight Time, a Viking Aviation LLC, doing business as Survival Flight, Bell 407 helicopter, powered by a single Rolls-Royce Corporation model M250- C47B turboshaft engine, experienced an uncontained engine failure while traveling to refuel after dropping off a patient. The engine failure necessitated a forced landing in a field. The pilot reported the incident occurred during the third flight of the day while using night vision goggles (NVG) from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (OK) to Okmulgee, OK with the autopilot engaged and the helicopter in level flight at 2,000 feet mean sea level (MSL), 1,400 feet above ground level (AGL). The pilot reported that the cockpit gauges indicated the engine torque to be 78%, the gas producer temperature (NGT) 707°C-710°C, and gas producer rotor speed (Ng also commonly referred to as N1) at 98.6%.

The company’s chief flight instructor reported that during a hydraulic system training maneuver, the pilot receiving instruction established too high of a sink rate, and the helicopter bounced upon touchdown. The helicopter then yawed to the right and bounced a second time before starting a slide towards the edge of the runway. The pilot receiving instruction attempted to correct by pushing the collective full down, however, the flight instructor realized that the helicopter would not come to a stop before exiting the runway and attempted to lift the helicopter back into the air. Before the helicopter could lift off, the left skid contacted the grass, the helicopter rolled to the left, and the main rotor contacted the ground. The helicopter then rolled to the right and came to rest on its right side. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor system, tail rotor system, and tail boom. The flight instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation. The chief flight instructor reported the accident could have been prevented if the flight instructor would have recognized the excessive rate of descent and made the necessary control inputs.

The pilot stated that he was flying the helicopter solo with the doors removed while scouting potential locations for an aerial photography flight scheduled for later that day. During cruise flight, he heard a loud“boom”and felt a slight airframe vibration. He subsequently lost tail rotor thrust and performed an autorotation to an area of snow-covered, mountainous terrain.
