It never ceases to amaze me how humanity will step up and do what’s right when urgent need arises. Once again, this was the case in late September 2024 when Hurricane Helene rolled in to the mountains of western North Carolina via Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Helene brought torrential rainfall which caused massive flooding and landslides that decimated highways, bridges, homes, and entire towns leaving death and destruction in her path. In short order, civilian helicopter owners and pilots had their machines on site delivering supplies and rescuing people. At one time during the first couple of weeks of rescue I was following over thirty helicopters on Flight Radar online. The unpaid team of civilians and veterans assembled, organized, and began a targeted action for rescue including flight plans and communication that would ensure everyone’s safety.
With these increased flight hours, it wasn’t long before these machines were dropping for inspections and repairs. It was imperative the mechanics work efficiently but not rushed. Mistakes are more likely to be made when a helicopter mechanic feels rushed. There is a difference between being rushed and working efficiently. As mechanics, we can feel the rush even when no one says a word. It takes self-discipline to maintain focus and do the job right and do the job safely when unseen pressure is on. With steady focus, in due time, the pilot and machine are back performing their jobs.
It's a creates a beautiful tapestry when it all comes together, and no one cares who gets the credit. Lives are saved, and the rest can and will be rebuilt. Helicopters continue to fly, and mechanics continue to inspect and repair. When the next disaster comes, we will all be ready.
