The responsibility for staying safe in the workplace rests with each individual…especially those who work in a dangerous environment. Yes, the company has rules and regulations, policies and procedures but if we don’t adhere to them what good are they? If we choose not to wear hearing protection, should we complain when our hearing suffers? Should someone be required to tell us to wear PPE when it’s provided, and the expectation is for us to wear it? Why do we put off required safety training until the last minute? Why is safety training treated like just something we must comply with year after year?
What is the reason for safety training? The reason is to bring awareness and keep that awareness at the forefront of the individual and collective mind of the team. The reason is to keep our limbs. The reason is to live and to go home to our families in one piece every day… and yes, the reason is to protect the company that employs us.
August 27th, two Delta Airlines mechanics were killed, and one seriously injured in the shop when a tire exploded. So many questions but the most asked were Why? and How? Why did this happen? How did this happen? Most A&P mechanics have an opinion, but judgment will have to wait until the multiple investigations are completed and reports are filed. My heart aches for these guys, their families and for the Delta family.
Making sure this never happens in our industry again should be foremost on everyone’s mind right along with practicing every other safety protocol we have ever been taught.
Safety should be a priority and practiced all day every day. Keep your head in the moment. Take the time to teach and show others how to perform each task with safety foremost in mind. Document and keep training records.
At our hangar we have a great technical and admin team. As in most workplaces, we spend so much time together we have come to think of each other as our work family. Because we love and care about each other and the family members that wait at home, we all have made a commitment to practice safe work habits and maintain a safe work environment. All members of our team meet regularly. Each Monday, as a part of the weekly planning meeting, safety issues are discussed to keep safety at the forefront as we head into the week. A Safety-Stand Down Day is observed twice a year to intensely focus on safety. Each employee in our corporation is provided access to an Employee Health & Safety Manual. All of these are part of a conscious deliberant decision to keep us safe as well as our customers and our company. Take the time today to notice what you’re noticing and ensure you are doing your best to operate and grow in a safe workplace and enhance the safety culture. Be ever present and vigilant in keeping yourself and others safe every minute of the day. Safety doesn’t just happen… we make it happen.
