For helicopter and drone flight crews, the hardest part of any search and rescue (SAR) mission isn't the flying—it's the searching. Staring at grid lines while monitoring terrain and fighting fatigue can push human endurance to its limit. Now, the industry is fundamentally changing the equation by pairing crewed helicopters with uncrewed drones to share the workload.
Developed by the military, manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) is moving into civilian SAR and all-hazard emergency response.
By networking autonomous drones with crewed rotorcraft, manufacturers are tasking uncrewed systems with handling tedious search patterns and data gathering, freeing human crews in the helicopter to focus on physical rescues. Switzerland may appear small on a map, measuring barely 348 kilometers (216 miles) from east to west, yet it boasts a remarkably big, dramatic landscape. From a distance, the Swiss Alps appear as picturesque white summits, deep valleys and glaciers beneath the sky. In reality, the Alps are constantly changing, shaped by wind, snow, rockfall, avalanches, and the people who live, work and travel in them. Switzerland is home to 48 mountains rising above 4,000 metres; 41 of these mountain tops are concentrated in the Valais Alps and among them is the world-famous Matterhorn.
In 1968, Air Zermatt began operations with one helicopter, an Agusta-Bell 206A Jet Ranger, beneath the unmistakable silhouette of this majestic mountain. The company was founded by Beat H. Perren, a pharmacist who became vice-president of Zermatt.
From the early beginning, the mission of this company was practical – to provide fast medical access and rescue capability for people living in, working in, and visiting the high-alpine region.
Now, more than half a century later, Air Zermatt’s red aircraft have become inseparable from life in the high Swiss Alps. For a team operating in such demanding and unforgiving terrain, choosing the right helicopter is every bit as important as the skill and experience of the crews flying it. Across several industry meetings this past year, I’ve been struck by how few air medical executives have a clear roadmap for artificial intelligence in their organizations, but this isn’t surprising given the rapid pace of AI development.
Leaders’ questions consistently focus on where to begin and how to balance compliance and costs with the promise of improved safety, clinical quality, and operations. The challenge is that AI features are appearing in the operations, clinical, and quality applications we already use, faster than our organizations can absorb them. The days of helicopter-only police units are coming to a close as drones play an increasingly important role in aerial law enforcement. It’s not only the addition of drones that is transforming this sector. “Air units are becoming far more data-driven and integrated,” said Mike Bucari, Leonardo Helicopters’ head of marketing for the Americas He said, “Aircraft are no longer standalone assets—they’re an integral part in a much broader network that includes ground units, drones, real-time operating centers, and AI-assisted analytics.”
As a result of this trend, law enforcement helicopters “must incorporate capabilities such as live video downlink, LTE/5G connectivity or Starlink-type solutions, and cloud-based evidence systems, which are becoming standard expectations,” Bucari told Rotor Pro. “There’s also a major shift toward a manned–unmanned teaming model. Drones are handling more routine, lower-risk missions—perimeter searches, accident reconstruction, overwatch—freeing helicopters to focus on high-speed pursuits, tactical insertions, and extended overwatch.”

The Hohenfels Training Area is home to the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC). The Center has several Observer Coach Training teams, including the Falcon Team. This unit is equipped with eight UH-72A Lakotas and is led by Colonel Beau G. Rollie. The senior aviation trainer informed Rotor Pro about the diversity of assignments for his skilled unit.
The JMRC is the sole U.S. Army forward stationed Combat Training Center (CTC) and has an important objective: training leaders, staff and units to dominate in conducting global multidomain operations.
The JMRC has 12 observer, coach and trainer (OCT) teams. Each OCT team has a specialized task during large-scale exercises, also called rotations. The Falcon Team conducts five to 10 large-scale rotations annually. To perform their mission, the team operates eight UH-72A Lakotas. Four of the light utility helicopters (LUHs) are painted in the regular green color scheme. The other four are in a yellow-brown camouflage pattern that names them ‘Bruised Bananas’.
