The world’s most successful super-medium category helicopter is set to further expand its presence in the world market, particularly for offshore transport supporting the energy industry. Leonardo and helicopter leasing company GDHF have signed a Framework Agreement to introduce ten more AW189s in the energy support market, with deliveries expected in the 2027-2029 period. The announcement was made during an official ceremony held at European Rotors in Amsterdam today.

Rome, 05 November 2024 – The Italian National Fire Corps (Vigili del Fuoco, part of the Ministry of the Interior) will introduce eight AW139 intermediate twin-engine helicopters in a special configuration dedicated to mountain operations and firefighting. These aircraft, which will add to an existing fleet of 28 AW139s, are expected to be delivered starting before the end of 2025, with handover completion before mid-2026, providing a further boost to mountain rescue operations and countering fire across the country.

Tokyo, 17/10/2024 – Leonardo and Mitsui Bussan Aerospace are celebrating 20 years of successful collaboration in the Japanese helicopter market. This longstanding partnership started in 2004 has strongly contributed to reshape and modernize the Japan’s helicopter fleet, with the introduction of latest generation rotorcraft models which have greatly benefited the widest scope of market applications and segments. Since then, the partners have jointly supplied 83 helicopters in the 5 to 9 ton weight categories to national, local and private operators, and 12 additional units are already contracted and scheduled for delivery before the end of 2024 and in 2025-2026.

On the occasion of the first AW09 Sales Network event dedicated to distributors and partners recently held at Kopter’s facility in Mollis, Switzerland, Leonardo announced the appointment of Aero Facility as an official distributor for the next generation single engine type in Japan. Aero Facility signed Preliminary Sales Contracts for six units in March 2023 and this latest move will extend Leonardo’s distributorship strategy to Japan to address all commercial applications’ requirements in the country. The AW609 tiltrotor programme set another major industry capability milestone after its first successful ship trial, which was recently conducted with the support of the Italian Navy. From 3-12 April, the AW609 AC4 aircraft, fully representative of the final production configuration, performed demonstration trials relocating from Leonardo’s facility based in Cascina Costa (Samarate) to Maristaer Grottaglie Naval Base. The tiltrotor, with test pilots and flight test engineers from Leonardo (supported by Italian Navy personnel for the embarked operations), took off from the base inbound from the Italian aircraft carrier (ITS CAVOUR - Navy Fleet Flagship), 20 nm offshore, showing its effective approach, stable deck landing, and touchdown capabilities.

Starting with an existing building and infrastructure at London Elstree Aerodrome, operations target Part 145 maintenance capabilities to be in place within autumn this year. The Hellenic Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is enhancing its emergency response capabilities by introducing three Leonardo AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopters. Under the recently signed contract, the new aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2026 with two units dedicated to healthcare missions and disaster relief and one unit to be used for transportation of the crisis management teams.
