18 December 2025 - Established Leonardo helicopter civil operator ASG Helicopter Services LLC (ASG) is introducing two AW189 super medium offshore-configured aircraft in Azerbaijan this month, with the first aircraft officially presented in the country on December 17 and the second one expected to arrive at the beginning of next year.
The event marks the entry of the AW189 into Central Asia and the Caucasus region for operations in the Caspian Sea, further expanding the aircraft’s strong global market presence across offshore transport and a wide range of other mission profiles. ASG currently operates a fleet of ten Leonardo helicopters, including six AW139 intermediate twins for offshore; two AW139s for Search and Rescue/Emergency Medical Service; and AW109 GrandNew light twins for VIP passenger transport, corporate transport, and aerial filming.. The addition of the AW189 brings significant benefits and new capabilities, allowing a unique combination of high capacity/long range with cost/effectiveness and latest standards.
It also delivers one-of-a-kind advantages in terms of commonalities with the AW139 for a more efficient fleet and crew management. An Authorized Service Station for the AW109 and AW139, ASG has extended this support capability also to the AW189. ASG’s AW189 program is the result of the strong collaboration among the operator, the manufacturer and Leonardo’s regional exclusive distributor Exclases Group (since 2007).
Belonging to the AW Family of products, the AW189 (8.3/8.6 tonne) combines superior payload and range with advanced technologies to successfully operate a wide range of missions including search and rescue, energy industry support, passenger transport, firefighting, and law enforcement. Unique features of the helicopter include the capability of the main transmission to run without oil for 50 minutes and a built-in auxiliary power unit. The AW189 is available with more than 200 certified kits and is the only aircraft in its class featuring a Full Ice Protection System (or, alternatively, a Limited Ice Protection System). The type is supplied with a comprehensive support and training service package tailored to meet specific customer requirements to maximize mission effectiveness and safety of operations. The aircraft is also certified for an automatic data transmission system enabling the aircraft to transmit flight data to a ground station using satellite communication in flight, 4G cell connectivity or Wi-Fi when on the ground. It offers a secure way to share an accurate picture of each flight so that Leonardo experts can assess data quickly, optimizing maintenance and support.
To date, more than 160 AW189 helicopters have been ordered by operators worldwide, with approximately 100 already in service—over 50 of which are currently deployed in offshore transport roles. Nearly ten years after its certification, the AW189 continues to lead the global super-medium helicopter class by market share, number of operators, countries, and applications including – offshore transport, search and rescue, firefighting and disaster relief, law enforcement and passenger transport. The AW189 is growing its presence in existing customers’ fleets as well as being selected by all new operators, particularly in the energy and public service markets.
ASG Helicopter Services LLC is one of the most modern aviation enterprises in Azerbaijan. The company has a long tradition in small aviation and every year its helicopters transport more than 150,000 passengers. ASG operates from a base at the Zabrat Airport.
