GPMS International has released a new Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) Program Manual and is making it openly available to the rotorcraft industry to help operators turn HUMS data into repeatable, real-world decisions, regardless of which system they operate. The guide is intended to expand access to structured HUMS practices for organizations that have never had a formal program framework, while supporting safer, and more effective use of health monitoring across diverse fleets.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is formalizing permanent restrictions for helicopters and powered-lift from operating in certain areas near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), unless these aircraft are conducting essential operations. These restrictions were put in place immediately following the American Airlines 5342 crash and supported by the NTSB’s preliminary recommendations.

The pilot was attempting to herd livestock when the helicopter contacted a powerline which damaged the main rotor system and resulted in a loss of control. The helicopter crash-landed into a shallow ditch and came to rest on its right side. The pilot was able to egress with minor injuries before the helicopter was destroyed by a post-impact fire. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation.

The pilot reported that while enroute, about two minutes from his planned landing zone, the low-fuel light illuminated. He flew past the intended landing zone, which was unlit, and continued searching for the landing zone until the engine suffered a total loss of power due to fuel exhaustion. The pilot initiated an autorotation, and, while searching for a landing reference, the helicopter impacted a power pole. The helicopter came to rest upright and sustained substantial damage to the tail boom, fuselage, and main rotor system.

The helicopter departed from the remote landing zone with the pilot and an aerial lineman to conduct aerial power line system work. ADS-B data showed that the helicopter approached the target powerline pole from the west. The helicopter maneuvered around the pole, and the data subsequently terminated at the pole.

The pilot reported that, while performing an aerial inspection of a fence, he heard a loud bang come from the engine and the helicopter began to shake and lose altitude. The shaking stopped momentarily but then started again and the engine lost total power. The pilot performed a forced landing, during which the helicopter impacted cedar trees and then rolled several times down a hill. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the fuselage, tail boom, and main rotor gearbox.

Marignane, France, 26 January 2026 – Airbus Helicopters logged 544 gross orders (net: 536) in 2025, highlighting a strong market growth with a solid performance this year across the entire civil and military range. The orders came from 205 customers in 50 countries. The Company also saw a strong market momentum for its Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) in 2025. In terms of unit bookings, Airbus Helicopters secured a market share of 51% of the civil and parapublic market and its military market share rose to 28%. The Company delivered 392 helicopters in 2025.
