Billings Flying Service Wins First-Ever Type 1 Exclusive Use Contract with Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation

BILLINGS, MONTANA (July 2, 2024): Montana-based Billings Flying Service (BFS) is pleased to announce it won Montana’s Department of Natural Resources and Conservation’s first exclusive use type 1 helicopter firefighting contract. BFS is providing a tanked CH-47 Chinook helicopter with high-volume precision water drop capability for the summer fire season contract, which started July 1. The aircraft will be based in Montana, however, could be mobilized to surrounding states under a cooperative agreement in place between the US Forest Service and State of Montana.

Leonardo appoints Aero Facility official AW09 helicopter distributor in Japan

On the occasion of the first AW09 Sales Network event dedicated to distributors and partners recently held at Kopter’s facility in Mollis, Switzerland, Leonardo announced the appointment of Aero Facility as an official distributor for the next generation single engine type in Japan. Aero Facility signed Preliminary Sales Contracts for six units in March 2023 and this latest move will extend Leonardo’s distributorship strategy to Japan to address all commercial applications’ requirements in the country. AW609 tiltrotor successfully completes first ship trial campaign

The AW609 tiltrotor programme set another major industry capability milestone after its first successful ship trial, which was recently conducted with the support of the Italian Navy. From 3-12 April, the AW609 AC4 aircraft, fully representative of the final production configuration, performed demonstration trials relocating from Leonardo’s facility based in Cascina Costa (Samarate) to Maristaer Grottaglie Naval Base. The tiltrotor, with test pilots and flight test engineers from Leonardo (supported by Italian Navy personnel for the embarked operations), took off from the base inbound from the Italian aircraft carrier (ITS CAVOUR - Navy Fleet Flagship), 20 nm offshore, showing its effective approach, stable deck landing, and touchdown capabilities.

Bell Announces First Flight of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CH-146C MK II Griffon Helicopter

French Army’s NH90 for Special Forces has started flight testing

Marignane, 18 June 2024 -  Airbus Helicopters has launched the flight test campaign for the prototype of the NH90 Standard 2. This standard is one of the latest NH90 configurations and is being developed specifically for the French Army Aviation, to support special forces operations. The French Ministry for Armed Forces has ordered a total of 18 NH90s in the Standard 2 configuration. Flight testing will continue until the end of the year in accordance with the schedule agreed with the French Armament General Directorate (Direction Générale de l’Armement).

NTSB Final Report: Estacada, OR

The pilot reported that he was relocating bundles of trees from the harvest field onto a truck bed. Approximately 30 minutes into the operation, the load hook did not immediately release when he was setting a bundle down. The pilot pressed the release button multiple times, as he had done in similar situations in the past. The helicopter’s momentum, as it moved back towards the field, caused the bundle to slide a few feet. One of the main rotor blades then struck the tail boom, and the other blade flapped down, cutting off the rear section of the tail boom, vertical stabilizer, and tail rotor. The helicopter spun several times before landing, resting flat on the skids. The landing impact was forceful enough to break the mast and dislodge the main transmission. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor, tail boom, vertical stabilizer, tail rotor, and transmission. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operations.

The pilot, two tactical flight observers, and the rescue specialist sustained fatal injuries. The helicopter was operated as a Title 41 United States Code public aircraft flight.
