Marignane, 31 October 2023 – Airbus Helicopters and Naval Group, in collaboration with the French Armament General Directorate, DGA (Direction génerale de l’armement), and the French Navy, have tested the SDAM demonstrator (Système de Drone Aérien Marine/ Naval Aerial Drone System) from a multi-mission frigate (FREMM). The trials took place on board the French Navy frigate, Provence in the Mediterranean Sea between the 2nd and the 9th of October. The vessel had previously been adapted by Naval Group to operate the SDAM. These sea trials were arranged to demonstrate the system’s high performance from an operational warship and the SDAM’s capabilities for surveillance and intelligence missions.

The Polish Land Forces has taken delivery of their first two AW149 helicopters during a ceremony held at the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade in Tomaszów Mazowiecki yesterday, where they are entering service 15 months after the contract signing.

On September 9, 2023, about 1345 Pacific daylight time, a Bell 212 helicopter, N873HL, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Balch Camp, California. The pilot was seriously injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 133 firefighting flight.

On October 8, 2023, about 1932 eastern daylight time, a Bell 407 helicopter, N802JR, was involved in an accident near Croydon, New Hampshire. The commercial pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was operated by JBI Helicopter Services under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a positioning flight.

Leonardo announced an order today for three AW139 medium twin-engine helicopters by Monroe Country in Florida. These aircraft will be operated by Trauma Star, a joint effort of Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and will provide air ambulance support across the Florida Keys from Lower Keys Medical Center and the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport. These AW139s will be delivered from Leonardo’s FAA-Certified Part 21 Production Facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, between the end of 2024 and early 2025, after which it will undergo dedicated mission customization before replacing the County’s existing fleet.

Stockholm/Zurich, October 25, 2023: European Medical Drone, the Swedish drone operator focusing on connecting hospitals by means of drone transportation, and Dufour Aerospace, the Swiss eVTOL innovator, today signed a development cooperation and purchase agreement for 11 Aero2 uncrewed tilt-wing aircraft. The agreement includes the delivery of one Aero2 X2.3 prototype aircraft in 2024 and 10 serial Aero2 aircraft with delivery starting in 2026. Savback Helicopters, Swedish helicopter vendor and partner of Dufour Aerospace, is assisting this transaction.

Alexandria, Va. (Oct. 24, 2023) – Following a 98-0 bipartisan vote by the US Senate, Michael G. Whitaker was approved on Tuesday to lead the FAA. He is most recently the chief operating officer of Supernal, Hyundai’s advanced air mobility (AAM) company. Whitaker also has previous FAA experience: from 2013–14, he served as the deputy administrator, where he led the agency’s efforts to modernize the US National Airspace System.
