DARPA Taps Sikorsky to Add Autonomy to U.S. Army-Owned Black Hawk Helicopter

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2024 – Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, has received a $6 million award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to install the company’s ALIAS/MATRIX™ flight autonomy system onto the U.S. Army’s experimental fly-by-wire UH-60M Black Hawk® helicopter. Designated MX, the upgraded aircraft will enable the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) to test and evaluate a wide range of autonomy capabilities, from single pilot operation to fully uninhabited flight.

NTSB Final Report: Cuba City, WI

The pilot reported that he was conducting agricultural spray operations at the time of the accident. The pilot stated that he was distracted by ground vehicle traffic and the helicopter struck a wire. He lowered the collective, and the helicopter impacted the field. The helicopter rolled forward and came to rest on the left side of the fuselage. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor system and the tail boom separated.

Toho Air signs for an additional AW139 helicopter to enhance shuttle service in Japan

Metro welcomes new director of safety

Metro Aviation has appointed Brady Carpenter as Director of Safety. Brady joined Metro Aviation in 2016 as an Operational Control Specialist before joining the Safety Department as the Flight Operations Quality Assurance Analyst in 2017. He was then promoted to Assistant Director of Safety in 2018. He has been instrumental in mining data from the IRIS system and implementing changes to the operations manual and training manual to strengthen safety.
