FORT RUCKER, Ala. (Aug. 13, 2026) — The U.S. Army announced today the award of the Flight School Next contract to M1 Support Services L.P., Denton, Texas, marking a major step in transforming how the Army trains future rotary-wing aviators at Fort Rucker, Ala.
Flight School Next will provide initial entry rotary-wing training for 800 to 1,500 Army pilots annually using a contractor-owned, contractor-operated solution with commercially available services and equipment at Fort Rucker, Alabama. It is designed to modernize the Army's aviation training enterprise, producing highly proficient initial entry aviators at a significantly lower cost to the Army.
The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract was announced with a combined cumulative total face value of $10,000,000,000 and a potential period of performance of up to 26 years. The first task order will support the contractor’s transition and is expected to cover a three- to four-year period in accordance with the approved transition plan.
The acquisition was executed using a Commercial Solutions Opening approach, enabling the Army to leverage commercial innovation and proven industry capabilities to deliver a modernized aviation training solution. The initiative reflects a collaborative effort among Army Aviation, acquisition professionals and industry partners to ensure future aviators are prepared to operate in increasingly complex and contested environments.
Through this approach M1 Support Services L.P., Denton, Texas, will provide aircraft, maintenance, simulators, flight and academic instruction and related support services while enabling the Army to maintain oversight of training standards, safety requirements and operational outcomes.
For more than 50 years, the Army's Initial Entry Rotary-Wing Flight Training program has produced aviators who support missions around the globe. Conducted at the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Rucker, the program currently trains approximately 1,250 new aviators annually.
"Flight School Next delivers a critical improvement in our Initial Entry Rotary Wing Training model. Simply put, it delivers new military helicopter pilots with far better foundational skills,” said Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, commanding general of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence. “The fact that it delivers this increased capability at a significant long-term savings to our Army is a great added benefit.”
Flight School Next consolidates aviation training functions into a single enterprise framework, replacing multiple contracts with an integrated solution focused on producing proficient aviators more efficiently and effectively. The modernization effort aligns with the Army's commitment to ensuring aviation training remains adaptable, sustainable and responsive to future operational requirements.

The program is designed to ensure students demonstrate foundational aviation skills, safe aircraft operation under visual and instrument flight conditions, terrain flight proficiency, navigation skills and tactical mission planning capabilities. The modernized training construct also incorporates industry best practices and advanced technologies to enhance training effectiveness while maintaining the Army's rigorous aviation standards.
Flight School Next supports the Aviation Center of Excellence's objectives to increase training efficiency, accountability and throughput while preserving the quality and professionalism expected of Army aviators.
