Madrid, November 18th, 2025
Entrol, the manufacturer of EASA and FAA certified FNPT, FTD, and FFS flight simulators, is proud to announce the sale of a new Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane FTD to Helicopter Express, a company renowned for its heavy-lift and mission-critical operations. The advanced simulator is designed to meet the rigorous training needs of pilots in firefighting, construction, and disaster relief.
This project is a testament to the strong collaboration between entrol and Helicopter Express, focused on providing the highest fidelity training for the iconic S-64 Skycrane. The simulator is scheduled for completion in October 2026, with an estimated delivery in February 2027.
A simulator built for critical missions
The new S-64E FTD is engineered to provide a training experience that is highly specific to the demanding missions of Helicopter Express. The simulator will feature dedicated mission capabilities, including realistic scenarios for firefighting with a water cannon, snorkeling via sea snorkel, and intricate cargo handling with a rear-facing control station for the external crew.
The cockpit is equipped with specialized "bubble windows", a key feature of the real aircraft that provides pilots with a better view during heavy-lift operations. With NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) technology and an enclosed Instructor Operating Station (IOS) with three screens, the simulator offers a completely immersive and controlled training environment.
Unparalleled realism and advanced technology
To achieve the highest level of realism, the simulator will incorporate cutting-edge technology:
-
Visual System: A state-of-the-art ENWALL LED visual system with an extra-long radius will meet all FAA regulations, providing an expansive and seamless field of view. The visual database will be powered by entrol Mission (ENVISION), using Unreal Engine, to create detailed and georeferenced scenarios, including a specific airport of the client's choice.
-
Control and motion: A top-quality control loading system and a powerful vibration system will replicate the precise feel and tactile feedback of the S-64E Skycrane.
-
Customizable training: The simulator will also include a Debriefing Station to analyze and review flight sessions, as well as optional Mixed Reality Googles for enhanced scenario training.
Entrol's leadership in S-64 simulation
This new sale is particularly significant as it represents the first S-64 FTD for Helicopter Express. It is also the third S-64 FTD in the world, with all three units manufactured by entrol. This milestone reinforces the company's unique expertise and leadership in providing advanced simulation solutions for this highly specialized heavy-lift helicopter. The simulator will be certified as an FAA FTD Level 7, the highest possible certification for a Flight Training Device without motion, ensuring that the training hours logged are officially recognized for a wide range of proficiency checks and courses.
"We are honored to continue our collaboration with Helicopter Express, a leader in critical mission operations," said entrol’s Sales Director Nacho Navacerrada. "This new S-64 FTD is a testament to our commitment to delivering specialized, high-fidelity solutions that not only meet but exceed the unique demands of the industry. We are proud to support Helicopter Express in ensuring their pilots are prepared for any mission."
Colby Martin, Heavy Lift Chief Pilot at Helicopter Express said that “Helicopter Express is proud to announce a major step forward in pilot training and operational readiness with the addition of a cutting-edge Level 7 FTD simulator for the S64 Aircrane — the first of its kind in the United States. This new capability will significantly enhance our ability to train and maintain mission-capable pilots, offering both initial and recurrent training specific to the Aircrane platform”.
He added that “this state-of-the-art simulator will allow our flight crews to receive mission-critical, hands-on experience in a controlled environment, directly supporting the high standards of safety, skill, and preparedness that Helicopter Express is known for. As a leader in aerial firefighting and heavy-lift operations, we are committed to staying at the forefront of innovation and excellence in aviation training”.
He is proud that this milestone underscores their dedication to supporting their pilots, advancing industry standards, and ensuring readiness for the complex missions they undertake across the country and beyond
