FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz., March 10, 2025 - The very popular line of StartStick portable ground power units (GPU) has found utilization with a longstanding charitable entity’s aviation program.
Aviation Battery Systems (ABS), manufacturer of the StartStick, reports that its StartStick continues to see usage growth by rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft operators worldwide, including Jungle Aviation and Relay Service (JAARS), a U.S.-based major player in global philanthropic efforts.
Since 1948, JAARS, an IRS designated 501(c)(3) based in Waxhaw, North Carolina, has used aircraft to transport equipment, supplies and Christian mission personnel into remote tropical locations.
These aviation operations continue globally today with a diverse fleet of aircraft supporting efforts to reach, support and build relationships with remote local populations.
ABS’ industry-leading rugged, lightweight GPU’s cover a wide range of fixed and rotary wing aircraft models flown by JAARS with weights ranging just 10 to 20 pounds and a compact design.
StartStick is a key part of flight operations worldwide, according to Mike Bunn with JAARS Aviation Operations.
“In Papua New Guinea we use the StartStick on the Bell 206L3 for as many starts as we can due to how much better the helicopter starts with the added power of the StartStick,” states Bunn. “Main battery starts can take 40 seconds or more plus higher peak Turbine Outlet Temps compared to 30 seconds with very controllable temps using the StartStick.”
Austere, hot temperature, high elevation operations see enhancement as well in JAARS’ typical mission scenarios when shutting down to offload supplies and field staff.
“Where it gets even more important is at a jungle or mountain destination; hot, humid and sometimes high,” adds Bunn. “At that point we have a heat-soaked engine meaning unaided starts are even more demanding of the pilot's modulation of the throttle.”
“But with the StartStick we can get more air moving through the engine faster for cooling before fuel is introduced, giving us a faster, cooler and more normal range start; very very useful.”
StartStick portable power provides multiple starts of single and twin-engine helicopters or fixed wing aircraft before recharge, expanding options for smaller field and remote operations.
And Bunn says the portability and minimal carrying weight are major benefits across the fleet. “Many times the heli will meet up with one of our fixed wing mission planes and the StartStick might even be used to boost the Turbine fixed wing start if needed.”
Back in the U.S., JAARS utilized StartStick in its disaster assistance operations during the recent devastating flooding in North Carolina and surrounding states.
“We also use the StartStick for washes and rinses of the Rolls Royce engine,” adds Bunn. “Lots of spool time that now the ship battery doesn't have to provide alone.”
“We’re very appreciative of JAARS choice to utilize our StartStick in their important global flight operations,” states ABS Global Business Director Paul Ross, Jr. “Their flights occur in some of the world’s most challenging environments and our ABS team is thrilled to play a role in successful mission outcomes.”
StartStick also proudly serves other global not-for profits, aerial applicators, air medical, corporate, fire/utility and airborne law enforcement programs.
“Meeting the constant need for modern, effective ground power in aviation and ground vehicle operations is our constant focus at StartStick,” adds Ross.
