Alexandria, Virginia (Jan. 08, 2024) – Helicopter Association International (HAI) is pleased to announce that Michael Sagely, senior pilot with the Air Operations unit of the Los Angeles County (California) Fire Department (LACFD), is the recipient of the 2024 Salute to Excellence Pilot of the Year Award. The award recognizes an outstanding single feat performed by a helicopter pilot or UAS aircraft pilot during the past three years or for extraordinary professionalism over time. The scholarships will be awarded February 25, 2024 at the Whirly-Girls Annual Reception during HAI HELI-EXPO in Anaheim, California. Thanks to the support of aviation leaders, 39 scholarships were bestowed upon deserving female aviators, the largest scholarship program in the helicopter industry.

Nikolsky Honorary Lectureship. On November 29, 2023, about 1430 central standard time, a MD Helicopters Inc. MD600N helicopter, N745MB, sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Sterling City, Texas. The commercial pilot and the aerial lineman sustained fatal injuries. The helicopter was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 133 rotorcraft external load flight.
