Bombardier celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Smart Services programs at NBAA-BACE on Oct. 21, highlighting programs that cover component support, avionics, tires, brakes, corrosion protection, and other maintenance-related services. The company says the programs evolved from Smart Parts, which launched in 1986. Bombardier used NBAA-BACE 2026 to emphasize both the lifespan of the program and the amount of support included under the Smart Services umbrella. It claims that more than 1,500 Bombardier aircraft are enrolled in Smart Services programs, representing more than 11 million total flight hours. John Travolta, a longtime pilot and Bombardier aircraft owner, appeared at the static display during Bombardier's NBAA-BACE 2026 activities at Henderson Executive Airport, providing additional visibility for Global 8000 and the company's customer-focused messaging and support initiatives. Maintenance cost programs have become common in large-cabin and midsize business jet ownership because they address the fact that major maintenance events rarely occur on a convenient schedule. Programs such as Smart Services allow operators to convert many unpredictable maintenance expenses into recurring hourly costs. That makes budgeting easier for corporate flight departments, management companies and private owners trying to forecast operating expenses years in advance. The anniversary showcases how ownership priorities have changed over four decades. The original Smart Parts concept addressed component support. Current programs are designed around broader ownership management, and the Elite tier adds parts shipping, technical publications, and a guaranteed flight-hour rate, subject to annual adjustments. That change reflects a market where operators increasingly want to manage aircraft as long-term business assets rather than simply react to maintenance events as they occur. Why it matters Business aircraft owners spend considerable time planning for costs they can predict. Maintenance programs exist to make more of the ownership experience predictable as well. Bombardier's 40-year Smart Services milestone is a reminder that cost predictability is one of the most valuable products in business aviation.
