Sky X opens new Louisiana FBO built for the Bombardier Global 8000

New FBO openings are common, but few are designed specifically to accommodate the largest business aircraft in service. Sky X's newest Louisiana facility is designed to serve the largest purpose-built business jet in production, the Global 8000.Sky X announced in August the opening of the first phase of its new FBO development at Hammond Northshore Regional Airport (HDC). The phase includes a 10,000 sq ft terminal and a 30,000 sq ft hangar capable of accommodating a Bombardier Global 8000. The facility also includes maintenance support, AOG services and Part 135 charter capability.A second phase is scheduled for later in 2026 that will add two more hangars of the same size with plans to add an FAA-certified repair station. Sky X has been operating an FBO from its existing avionics facility at HDC since 2025. The updated FBO will be joining the Avfuel network enabling customers to use the Avtrip loyalty program for fuel purchases. The hangar shortage pushing jets to secondary airportsGrowth in business aviation has increased pressure on airport infrastructure as operators deal with hangar shortages and congestion at primary airports across the nation. As a result, secondary airports have become more attractive due to available capacity, easier access and operational flexibility. What many secondary airports lack, however, is infrastructure designed specifically for large-cabin and ultra-long-range aircraft. Multiple secondary airports across the U.S., like Trenton-Mercer Airport (TTN) and Chandler Municipal Airport (CHD), have been adding additional facilities to better support the demand. Sky X's investment reflects this trend and positions the airport as an alternative capable of handling the same aircraft categories found at larger business aviation hubs.Market ImpactThe development creates another large-cabin option in a region that historically has had fewer purpose-built facilities targeting ultra-long-range aircraft. The airport's location between Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) and the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) gives operators accessibility in the region without relying exclusively on those larger airports. The project reflects a belief that the region can support infrastructure aimed at the upper end of the business aviation market. That's a specific and expensive bet. By planning additional large-cabin hangar capacity early, the company is positioning itself for future growth instead of just responding to current activity levels. For operators in the region, the FBO facility is another viable option for large-cabin jets in an area that historically had few. For the aviation industry, it is another reminder that business aviation infrastructure growth is no longer limited to traditional hubs as more investments are now occurring in secondary markets.
