Even the newest, most technologically advanced aircraft have components that will eventually become dated or unsupported. While aircraft typically remain in service for decades, the electronics installed in them often do not. Aspen Avionics' latest announcement is a reminder of that for owners of its EFD1000 and EFD500 Evolution displays. Sunsetting legacy displays Aspen Avionics has put first-generation Evolution display owners on notice that repairs, rebuilds and exchanges will continue only while existing parts inventories last or until Dec. 1, 2026. The company cited parts obsolescence as the reason and warned that repair lead times could become considerably longer even before that date. The change does not affect related accessories including batteries, RSM units, ACUs, configuration modules and EA100 autopilot adapters. Aspen's newer MAX and E5 displays are also unaffected. The Evolution PFD was certified and began shipping in 2008 and helped make glass-panel retrofits practical without major panel modifications. The platform is installed in thousands of aircraft today, leaving a large fleet whose owners may soon need to plan for future display replacements. Market impact The announcement highlights a broader issue as some of the first generation of aftermarket glass-panel installations begin to age. Aircraft can remain in service for decades even as the avionics installed in them become harder to support. For buyers and sellers, a display may look modern, especially compared to a traditional six-pack, but its age and support status should still be taken into account when considering ownership costs. Why it matters Avionics modernization is not necessarily a one-time event. Owners who invested heavily in glass upgrades more than a decade ago may now have to decide whether to repair, replace or upgrade those systems again. One manufacturer's decision to sunset a product line does not make an industry trend. But if similar support issues emerge across other early-generation glass-panel systems, it could contribute to a broader avionics refresh cycle across the general aviation fleet.
