It takes a lot more than passing a regulation to move a market. Someone has to make the first move. After MOSAIC went live on July 24, Van's Aircraft rang the bell. At EAA AirVenture 2026, the company delivered its first airplane to carry an FAA airworthiness certificate issued under Part 22, an RV-12iS painted in a classic Piper Cub yellow.That airplane left Oshkosh with a direct route to Tom Snow of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, who plans to lease it to Crystal Air Academy in Chattanooga for training. Van's founder Dick VanGrunsven and EAA Chairman Jack Pelton were there for the handoff.Why this one countsThis is the first factory-new airplane to receive a Part 22 airworthiness certificate and go into service. While other manufacturers brought MOSAIC aircraft to the show, including a CubCrafters Carbon Cub on display, none have entered the market through a paying customer and started earning revenue. The spec sheet states the capabilities but typically the market waits for proof that the promise can be delivered.Another reason this little airplane matters has everything to do with Van's roots as a kit aircraft builder. A Part 22 certificate gives the RV-12iS model a title, financing, and resale value that experimentals cannot match. For flight schools, the draw is a certified, IFR-capable trainer they can finance and resell. Van's lists a starting price of $246,200 for the IFR version and says the airplane can be flown and trained in actual instrument conditions, which the company calls a first for a new factory airplane at that price.After years of talk, MOSAIC has landed with a real airplane and a paying customer. For the used market, a new segment of certified aircraft that did not exist a week ago will start to take root.Van's got there first and certainly won't be the last. All eyes are on Part 22 to see whether this becomes a trend.
