The aviation industry has been working with hybrid-electric technology for years now, but the next step may not be building better components. It may be integrating that technology into aircraft architecture. What happened Airbus announced the Large Scale Integration Demonstrator of Hybrid Electrical Architecture (LEIA) project on Wednesday. The company states that the goal of LEIA is to prepare hybrid-electric systems for integration and certification in the future, acting as a bridge between component innovation and aircraft maturity. It focuses on high-voltage generation, distribution and aircraft-level integration of hybrid-electric systems for future short and medium range aircraft. The project builds on the SWITCH project, which focuses on hybrid-electric powertrain subsystems. Moving beyond individual technologies The aviation industry has developed multiple electric propulsion components, batteries, power-distribution equipment, controllers, motor-generators, and energy-management software. The LEIA project is intended to connect these individual pieces together in a single aircraft. This can be difficult as integration creates challenges involving power demands, thermal management, system redundancy, reliability, certification requirements and component compatibility. Why manufacturers are investing in architecture Aircraft integration and energy management are widely viewed as bottlenecks for future hybrid-electric aircraft development. These individual components previously focused on demonstrating that these technologies could work. This announcement shows that aviation's electrification conversation appears to be maturing. Many of these technologies have been proven to work; now they need to work together inside a certifiable aircraft. Projects like LEIA may influence how future aircraft that use hybrid-electric systems are designed, certified, and operated. Airbus expects to be able to perform a major ground demonstration in 2027. The demonstration should provide a clearer picture of how quickly hybrid-electric technologies can start actually operating in the sky.
