Some airports see more activity than others. And perhaps no other airport on the planet exemplifies that better than Wittman Regional Airport (OSH) in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with a massive influx of activity in a single week for EAA's AirVenture. A total of 16,246 total aircraft operations happened at OSH during 2025's AirVenture. This high activity has strained existing infrastructure, with aircraft storage a particular point of focus. With the future in mind, on June 17 the airport announced that Winnebago County has approved a 50-year lease for Volare Hangars to build additional hangar space along with other improvements to the Oshkosh Aviation Park. What the county actually approved The county Board of Supervisors approved 47 acres of county land inside the park. Volare Hangars is also currently working on purchasing 30 acres of city-owned land to bring that number to 77 acres. The company plans to build multiple large and small hangars through phases. The large hangars are meant to attract more aviation businesses to the airport and the smaller hangars are to meet the demand for more general aviation space at OSH. While the preliminary proposal stated that Volare would build 100 hangars, that was not mentioned in the approval. A 12-year bet on the southeast cornerThe Aviation Business Park was created about 12 years ago by the county and the city to grow aviation business on the southeast side of the field. This growth is made with the goal of both supporting AirVenture activity and increasing activity at the airport for the rest of the year. County Executive Gordon Hintz claims that the activity and lease revenue would reduce OSH's reliance on property taxpayers. "I think we forget sometimes that, to the aviation community around the world, this is one of the airport meccas, and we really want to build on the two-week period of AirVenture, and so does Volare," said Hintz. "If we can get the hangar development and we can get the lease revenue, it would clearly bring in more dollars to help the county with the budget and reduce the reliance on property taxpayers." Will the hangars remain full for the other 50 weeks? This development means that there is more hangar supply at the nationally known field, but also provides room for potential charter, MRO and corporate flight departments. The real question is whether this development can attract enough activity to fill the hangars for the rest of the year.
