Overall Price Movement
Fuel price spikes attributed to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are lasting longer than many anticipated, with each passing day suggesting stabilization rather than relief. According to Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED), wholesale pricing for Jet A fuel has not surpassed 2022 highs. However, according to GlobalAir.com retail price data, the average Jet A price for April not only exceeded the peak in 2022, but set a record high for the past decade.
Even with a significant limit to production and distribution, operators are still willing to pay a premium to secure the fuel they need. This is true across the board, whether fueling an aircraft or a car. Even if the strait opens tomorrow, the fuel an FBO purchases today will not be in its hands for several weeks, so price relief could be further down the road.
April 2026's average 100LL price of $6.93 has already surpassed April 2022, a year made significant for fuel pricing by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The July 2022 monthly average of $7.55 remains the highest avgas price recorded in the past decade, but the current 100LL at the time of writing, $7.09, suggests a new record could be set before the first day of summer.
Jet A is seeing record highs on retail pricing. April 2026's monthly average of $7.73 has already surpassed the July 2022 peak of $7.25 - the previous record high over the past decade. At the time of writing, the live average price for Jet A on GlobalAir.com reads $7.85, indicating that the current climb may not be over.
While SAF's early price volatility reflected the creation of supply and distribution infrastructure, its prices have broadly followed Jet A trends. As such, April 2026 shows the highest monthly SAF average since GlobalAir.com began tracking in 2022 at $10.24 - a jump of nearly a dollar from March. Though large month-to-month swings were common when SAF was first introduced, pricing had fairly stabilized since May 2024, making April's movement the most notable in two years.
These national averages do not tell a uniform story. Operators in the Eastern, Southern, Great Lakes, Central and Southwest regions may have experienced something closer to stabilization in April, as Jet A deviations remained below 10 cents in these areas. However, pilots in New England, the Northwest Mountain, Western Pacific and Alaskan regions likely saw April bring continued increases.Until access through the Strait of Hormuz is restored and supply chains normalize, operators can expect little relief - and the data suggests we may not have even reached the peak.
