Piper Saratoga veers off runway at Arizona airport and bursts into flames

A Piper PA-32 Saratoga II ( N4190E) crashed on Wednesday at the Marana Regional Airport (AVQ) in Arizona. The aircraft was landing at approximately 5:12 p.m. when it overran runway 3 and burst into flames, according to ASN. The Marana Police Department reported that the pilot and passenger were killed in the crash and have not been identified. It is unknown what caused the accident to occur. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued late Wednesday and said the airport would be closed for several hours on Thursday for investigations, according to KOLD News. A similar incident happened at AVG on Feb. 19, 2025, when a Lancair 360 MK II struck a Cessna 172 from behind and caught fire, killing two people. The incident renewed calls for a control tower, as the airport is an uncontrolled airfield with no ATC staff. Vic Hathaway with Marana told KOLD News that the hope is to start construction next year. "This is really important to us and why we have been pursuing this for so many years." While it's believed a control tower would have helped with the 2025 incident, it is unclear if a tower would have made a difference for this crash.
