Ground stops issued as U.S. prepares for major thunderstorms

Multiple ground stops and delays have been issued across the East Coast by the FAA due to severe weather on Monday. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Baltimore International Airport (BWI), Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) and Tampa International Airport (TPA) have been issued groundstops due to thunderstorms. Additionally, multiple airports have been delayed due to high winds and low ceilings. The FAA has also said that snow and wind could affect operations at Midway International Airport (MDW) and Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), according to Aerotime. The Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) previously had ground stops issued but were removed early afternoon, according to Fox Business News. Airlines have been heavily affected, with American Airlines cancelling over 500 flights, and Southwest Airlines and Delta Airlines both cancelling more than 400 flights. There have been reports of three-hour delays in flights and TSA lines of almost two hours, according to CBS News. The heavy traffic and severe weather have worsened existing staffing issues. The FAA advises all travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Severe weather on the East Coast is causing flight delays and cancellations at airports.
