Multiple airlines have cancelled flights to the Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) and the Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) after a surge of cartel attacks in the Mexican state of Jalisco caused by the death of Nemesio "El Mencho" Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
El Mencho was killed during a shoot-out with the Mexican Army in his home state of Jalisco on Sunday, according to CBNC. Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco and Puerto Vallarta is a popular tourist destination. Videos have been posted online of passengers and staff running through terminals and outdoor areas of the airports.
Authorities declared a Code Red alert during the attacks and federal forces were posted around PVR's perimeter. While many international airlines, like American Airlines, have cancelled all flights to Jalisco, GDL has continued to operate, but citywide roadblocks have severely disrupted access, according to Aviation24. Large plumes of smoke have been seen from the airports and there are reports of gunfights between cartel gunmen and security forces, according to Aerotime.
