Roland Steadham was an aviation YouTuber and Chief Meteorologist for KBOI in Boise, Idaho. He was flying the Carbon Cub as part of a promotional program in which CubCrafters provides the airplane to social media influencers and had already posted one video covering the aircraft. The county office reported the aircraft appeared to have clipped a power line and crashed onto the ice-covered Black Canyon Reservoir on the Payette River. The plane crash resulted in a significant power outage in the area. It is unknown who was piloting the aircraft, but the second victim has been identified as Dallin Laufenberg of Meridian, according Idaho News 6.
"CubCrafters is aware of a tragic aircraft accident that occurred today in Idaho involving a Carbon Cub aircraft owned by the company and loaned to a private individual," said CubCrafters in a statement, according to AvBrief. "We were deeply saddened to learn that the accident resulted in two fatalities. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives. We extend our deepest sympathy during this incredibly difficult time. CubCrafters is cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities as they conduct a thorough investigation. Out of respect for those affected and for the investigative process, we will not speculate on the circumstances surrounding the accident. Safety has always been a core value at CubCrafters. We take matters like this with the utmost seriousness and are committed to supporting the investigation in any way possible."
Steadham was a commercially licensed pilot and avid skydiver with over 3,000 logged flight hours and over 700 skydives. He operated his own small aircraft out of Emmett and he often would share stories about local pilots and their accomplishments, according to KBOI. CBS News senior national weather correspondent Rob Marciano said he had known Steadham for over 20 years and remembered him as a great guy, a total pro and a gentleman. CubCrafter VP Brad Damm posted a tribute to Steadham on Facebook, calling him an aviator in every sense.
