FAA seeks comments on designated pilot examiner survey

The FAA is seeking public comments on a proposed voluntary post-checkride survey for pilots designed to evaluate designated pilot examiners. The survey will be sent to pilots after they complete check rides administered by designated pilot examiners, who are private citizens authorized by the FAA to conduct pilot certification tests. Congress directed the agency to enhance oversight of examiners under the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, including establishing a system to track examiner performance. Pilots would be asked about a dozen yes-or-no questions regarding examiner professionalism, exam content, testing environment, and the length of the ground and flight portions of the evaluation. The survey would take roughly seven minutes to complete, according to the FAA. The agency estimates about 49,000 pilots will respond each year, totaling more than 343,000 minutes of survey time annually. The FAA said the new information collection is required under the Paperwork Reduction Act and will be submitted to the Office of Management and Budget for approval. The FAA will use the information collected to track the performance and merit of DPEs. The agency is accepting comments through Feb. 27. Comments may be submitted online at regulations.gov by referencing the appropriate docket, by email to [email protected], or by mail to the FAA's Flight Standards Service office in Washington.
