The McKinney National Airport (TKI) has received a $14.8 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to support construction tied to the planned launch of commercial passenger service.
The McKinney City Council approved the grant during its Nov. 18 meeting. It now brings the airport, which has been a general aviation airport for more than 40 years, one step closer toward offering commercial flights to the North Texas region. Service is targeted to begin in late 2026.
The grant will support several major eastside projects currently under construction, including a 46,000 square foot terminal with four initial gates, food and beverage concessions, hold rooms for passengers, an aircraft ramp with space for four commercial aircraft, a new taxiway C, a nearly 1,000 space public parking lot, car rental facilities, and more.
"Important progress is being made in constructing the terminal and other eastside projects as we continue to work toward welcoming commercial passenger flights in late 2026, and we are extremely thankful to TxDOT for this significant and supportive $14.8 million grant," Mayor Bill Cox said in a statement.
Cox also acknowledged the efforts of Sen. Angela Paxton and Rep. Jeff Leach in helping secure the state funding.
The city and airport are continuing to pursue additional federal funding for the entire project. This grant helps advance construction of the $79 million terminal and related facilities. The projects are also supported by sales tax revenue bonds from the McKinney Economic Development Corporation and the McKinney Community Development Corporation, Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone funds, city utility and airport construction dollars, and airport operating revenue.
