New wing of CAF on a mission to bring WWII-era aircraft to Tampa Bay

Planes at Tpa Bay Wing Poker Run - Jason SkinnerA group of resolute individuals are investing their time and sweat equity for a WWII-era aircraft to be assigned to the newly formed Tampa Bay Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). Following the program guidelines of the CAF's New Unit Initiative, the Unit held its first fundraising event this past weekend in Lakeland, at the airport that they are thrilled to call home The Unit's Officers feel they are on track to have an aircraft assigned to them by CAF headquarters within the next three months.Ken Hewes, Executive Officer for the Tampa Bay Wing, was incredibly pleased with the participation of their Poker Run held Oct. 7 at the Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL). For a first-time event for a membership club that is less than a year old, they had over 25 registered aircraft, 19 donated prizes in excess of $4,000 value (not bad for a $50 registration fee), north and south routes mapped out, and quite a number of inquisitive people in attendance that just wanted to see what all the enthusiasm was about.Ken Hewes XO speaking to unit members - Carolyn HutchinsFor most, knowledge of the CAF consists of simply admiring their aircraft at air shows and fly-ins. In speaking with the various Tampa Bay Wing members, it was evident that they were volunteering in the hot sun to raise funds because they are passionate about the preservation of the vintage WWII-era aircraft, and more importantly, the preservation of military history as well. They are excited to be part of the founding group that has planted a flag in the Tampa Bay area for the community to have its own opportunity to experience and honor America's military aviation history. The Unit had initially identified Brooksville as their base but quickly realized that Lakeland would better suit their long-term goals. "The support from the Lakeland Linder International Airport was rock-solid at our first meeting. The SUN ‘n FUN organization is also all in and we look forward to partnering with them because of our shared emphasis on educational programs." said Hewes. Other companies such as Sheltair and Double M Aviation are also officially onboard as sponsors. Planes at Tampa Bay Wing Poker Run - Carolyn HutchinsThe CAF announced its New Unit Initiative in 2021, primarily in response to the increase in public interest. The CAF put a formal program together that includes resources and mentors to assist new units in getting established and becoming successful. The Tampa Bay Wing is following this program and is quickly checking off all the requirements. "We have a multi-year plan for our Unit which includes becoming an Airbase. A CAF Airbase is attained with more members and multiple aircraft to support. We have to financially support ourselves which includes the maintenance of our aircraft." said Hewes. "We have big goals and everyone here is committed to making them a reality," he said with a smile. It all begins with a yet-to-be-determined aircraft assignment from the CAF headquarters in Dallas. An aviation certificate like a pilot or aircraft mechanic is not a requirement to join. One just needs to have a love of vintage aircraft. "When I was a child, my dad brought me to see FiFi, the historic B-29, and when I saw her fly, I was hooked. Being a part of the CAF enables me to use my aviation training and bring that same experience to the young people of today," said Gary Knuth, Tampa Bay Wing's Financial Officer.Planes at Tampa Bay Wing Poker Run - Jason Skinner The Tampa Bay Wing meets on the third Saturday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the EAA Warbird Building on the SUN ‘n FUN Expo Campus. There are only a few exceptions such as their upcoming October meeting is on the 14th. All are welcome to attend. You can follow the unit on Facebook @CAFTampaBay.
