Rolls-Royce, Shell Aviation launch SAF program for BizAv customers

Rolls-Royce announced that Business Aviation customers around the world can now sign up for the new SAFinity program. The program combines independently verified sustainability projects with a direct investment in SAF in an effort to enhance support and accelerate the availability and use of SAF in aviation. SAFinity allows BizAv customers to operate flights with sustainability in mind. The program is now available for all business aircraft and engines from any manufacturer and is part of the ongoing commitment Rolls-Royce has made to reach net zero carbon by 2050. Rolls-Royce is working with Shell Aviation on the SAFinity to provide BizAv customers with new, clean energy solutions. "We are excited about leaving the pilot phase of our pioneering SAFinitiy service and opening it up to the wider market," said Frank Moesta, Senior VP of Strategy and Future Programs at Rolls-Royce. "We have worked hard over the last months to ensure a smooth customer experience, integrating STRIPE payment and making it as easy as possible for customers to fuel their journey to net zero." The teams from Rolls-Royce and Shell are also working on integrating Avelia, a blockchain-powered book and claim platform for SAF. Avelia uses blockchain technology to ensure the secured allocation of SAF's environmental attributes to companies and operators once the fuel has been delivered into the fuel network. Rolls-Royce is committed to the energy transition, with plans to achieve net-zero emissions in aviation, shipping and power generation by 2050. The company is also working on other technologies and long-term alternatives to fossil fuels. Using SAF as a low-emission solution is vital to the decarbonization of long-distance air travel. "Unlocking SAF demand in the business aviation segment can help bolster overall demand signals, so we're pleased to continue our work with Rolls-Royce and the SAFinity program into the commercial phase," Shell Aviation President Jan Toschka said. "Integrating Avelia, our blockchain SAF platform, into the SAFinity offering showcases how digital technology can support this customer group to support their investment into SAF regardless of geographical or scale limitations."RELATED STORIES:Rolls-Royce completes SAF engine compatibility testing programRolls-Royce completes 100 percent SAF testing on BizAv engines Recently, Rolls-Royce completed its 100 percent SAF compatibility testing program, proving there are no engine barriers to the use of fully sustainable fuel. The company also demonstrated that current engines for large civil and business jet applications can operate using 100 percent SAF as a full "drop-in" option. The testing and demonstrations have proven the capabilities of SAF as well as laid the groundwork for moving this type of fuel toward certification. Currently, SAF is only certified for blends up to 50 percent with conventional jet fuel. Unblended SAF has the potential to substantially reduce CO2 lifecycle emissions compared to traditional jet fuel.
