The Cavanaugh Flight Museum is closing after 31 years. As the new year begins, the museum is moving all of its aircraft, educational displays and memorabilia to the North Texas Regional Airport (GYI). The airport opened in 1993 at the Addison Airport (ADS). The museum announced the news on its website, sharing the start of a new chapter and thanking the many visitors, volunteers, donors and staff over the years. The museum enjoyed a final open weekend at the end of 2023 and by Jan. 2, 2024 it announced on Facebook that the museum was officially closed. The museum had been located at the Addison Airport and will now be moving its collection to GYI. The location is not open to the public yet.
The Cavanaugh Flight Museum had an impressive aircraft collection including warbirds from WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and civilian aircraft. The collection included a Fokker Dr.1, a Piper L-4J, a North American AT-6, a North American P-51D Mustang, a Lockheed F-104A Starfighter, a Sikorsky UH-34D Seahorse, a McDonnell-Douglas F-4C Phantom II and a Piper J-3 Cub. The museum also owned armor, military trucks, weapons and civilian cars.
According to The Dallas Morning News, the museum was one of the only open during the pandemic due to its flexible setup. The items in its collections were displayed in large aircraft hangars or outdoor spaces, allowing for social distancing.
The museum has not shared any additional updates about the move. Interested visitors can sign up to receive updates on the progress and the eventual new opening.
