Leonardo awarded contract for 32 TH-73A helicopters by U.S. Department of Defense

Leonardo, through AgustaWestland Philadelphia Corp., has been awarded a firm-fixed-price contract valued at USD 176,472,608 for the production and delivery of 32 TH-73A helicopters, initial spares, support and dedicated equipment, and specific pilot and maintenance training services. This contract, as Fiscal 2020 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds, was competitively procured via a request for proposal of various offers. Work will be mainly performed at Leonardo’s Philadelphia facility and is expected to be completed in October 2021.

U.S. Helicopter Safety Team Names Nick Mayhew of L3Harris as Co-Chair

WASHINGTON DC – Nick Mayhew, General Manager of the L3Harris Arlington Training Center in Texas, has been named the new industry co-chairman of the United States Helicopter Safety Team (www.ushst.org). The USHST was formed in 2013 as a regional partner within the International Helicopter Safety Foundation (www.IHSF.aero) to lead the industry’s and government’s cooperative effort to promote safety and work to reduce fatal helicopter accidents. Mayhew succeeds Raj Helweg, chief pilot of Air Methods, who continues to serve on the USHST Steering Commiittee.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Headland, AL

On December 25, 2019, about 1713 central standard time, a single-engine, turbine-powered Bell 407 helicopter, N663SF, sustained substantial damage when it collided with terrain while attempting to land at the Headland Municipal Airport (0J6), Headland, Alabama. The commercial pilot was fatally injured, and the flight nurse and paramedic were not injured. The helicopter was operated by Viking, LLC, doing business as Survival Flight, Inc, as a medical emergency flight conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135. A company visual flight rules flight plan was filed, and visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight that departed 0J6 about 1654.
