THE POSITION

The Fresno Police Department is looking for an Aviation Mechanic Leadworker dedicated to public service who cares about the Fresno community and strives to serve with compassion, honesty, and respect. An Aviation Mechanic Leadworker under general supervision, provides lead direction and performs skilled, technical work repairing, maintaining, and overhauling City-owned aircraft and related equipment in accordance with Airworthiness Standards prescribed by applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, Airworthiness Directives, aircraft manufacturer’s guidelines, and Police Department policies and procedures.

The Aviation Mechanic Lead worker facilitates technological support for mission specific equipment such as the video and FLIR system, high intensity spotlight, and various computer software programs installed in the helicopter computer. The Aviation Mechanic Lead worker establishes and maintains a liaison with various service support providers, parts manufacturers, and other vendors.

Incumbent coordinates with the Chief Pilot and the unit supervisor to establish maintenance schedules and planning necessary to ensure aircraft availability in furtherance of airborne law enforcement operations. The Aviation Mechanic Lead worker is responsible for maintaining records of flight hours, maintenance, inventory, parts warranty tracking, invoices, and freight shipping and receiving. The Aviation Mechanic Lead worker will create and submit record reporting spreadsheets as needed.

The Aviation Mechanic Lead worker generally works daytime hours Monday through Friday but may be called out in response to the unit's operational needs. The Aviation Mechanic Lead worker is required to share “standby” responsibilities with Aviation Mechanic I/II. Standby duty and callouts will be compensated in accordance with the existing Memorandum of Understanding of their respective bargaining unit.

The ideal candidate will possess experience providing maintenance, service, and repair of helicopters, basic computer skills, working knowledge of Microsoft programs, and good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

One vacancy exists in the Police Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.


VETERAN’S PREFERENCE

Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.

DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits includes ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
