Pictured: North American T-6 TexanThe Culpeper Regional Airport (CJR) in Virginia will host the Fall Foliage Flights, provided by The Capital Wing of the CAF. At the height of fall foliage in the region, various warbirds from the Capital Wing will offer rides with incredible views of the Virginia countryside. The flights will be available on Oct. 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and parking and attendance are free.
The North American T-6 Texan will be a featured warbird at the event. The T-6 was a trainer in WWII and taught the U.S. airmen advanced tactics needed to fly high-performance flyers during combat. The aircraft is powered by a 600hp Pratt andamp; Whitney "Wasp" radial engine, which provides top speeds of over 200mph with a cruise speed of 145 mph. The T-6 Texan is a highly desired warbird ride and the flights sell out quickly. The flights in the T-6 are $450 for one passenger.Grumman AA-1B
The other two warbirds flying the Fall Foliage Flights are a 1942 Boeing PT-17 Stearman open cockpit biplane and a Fairchild UC-61 Forwarder. Rides will also be available in a Grumman AA-1B. A flight for one passenger in the PT-17 is $315 and $125 for the AA-1B. A flight for two adults or one adult and two children in the UC-61 is $225. Japanese Fuji LM-1 and the French Alouette II
There will be a variety of attractions on the airport grounds during the Fall Foliage Flights offering something for the whole family. There will be two rare warbirds on the hangar ramp. The warbirds on the ramp are a French Alouette II, the world's first jet-powered helicopter, and a Japanese Fuji LM-1 aircraft, which is one of only three in the world. Attendees can "walk on the wing" of a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, the largest and heaviest single-engine bomber during WWII. Guests can walk through the CAF hangar to see two WWII-era warbirds under maintenance, the Vultee BT-13 Valiant and a rare Stinson OY-1, which flew in combat during the June 1944 Battle of Saipan.T-16 Tank and the Ural motorcycle
In addition to the impressive warbirds, guests can see a 1943 WWII U.S. Army T-16 light tank and a WWII Jeep on the Capital Wing ramp. There will be reenactors setting up an encampment to show what life was like for a U.S. soldier during WWII. There will also be a Ural motorcycle with a sidecar available for rides. The Capital Wing PX trailer will host a variety of military aviation-themed items for sale like aircraft models. Guests can also purchase personalized dog tags on an original 1941 U.S. Army dog tag machine. There will be a B-26 bomber 50-caliber machine turret on display for kids to climb into and get a top gunner experience. For a unique purchase, attendees can buy a range of authentic aircraft cockpit instruments.
The Capital Wing CAF is a volunteer nonprofit organization. All flights can be booked in advance of the weekend event and rides not booked in advance will be available for sale at the Culpeper Airport that weekend. All aircraft flights are subject to unexpected maintenance, weather and pilot availability.
