The McKinney National Airport (TKI) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of purchasing its FBO, the McKinney Air Center. One decade later, the FBO has seen substantial growth and become an asset for the city.
The McKinney City Council authorized the purchase of the FBO assets at the Collin County Regional Airport, now the McKinney National Airport, in 2013. The purchase was made with the hopes of developing a source of economic growth in the area. In the last ten years, the FBO and airport have become a central part of the city's infrastructure, contributing greatly to the local economy and creating job opportunities. Since taking control of the FBO, revenues on average have increased by about $1 million yearly and the revenues in 2023 are almost $10 million higher than a decade ago.
Fiscal Year 2023 saw increased operations, hangar rentals and major infrastructure and development projects. Most recently, on Sept. 22 the city announced that a new terminal opened at the FBO. The airport had a record-breaking five percent rise in takeoffs and landings, with over 152,000 operations.RELATED STORIES:McKinney Air Center opens new FBO terminalCirrus breaks ground on new facility at McKinney airport
The success in 2023 demonstrated the important role the airport and FBO play in the local economy and its commitment to enhancing the community. There are ongoing projects and the FBO is thriving. Along with the new terminal, manufacturer Cirrus Aircraft broke ground on a new 45,000-square-foot facility, a runway extension was completed in September, the Texas Department of Public Safety relocated North Texas operations to the airport, ten privately funded hangars opened in January and a new airport maintenance building was completed.
"This significant growth at the airport is great news for the residents of McKinney," TKI Director Ken Carley said. "The ad valorem tax revenue generated by the airport and FBO pays for local road improvements, emergency services, education, and more. Additional growth will allow us to continue to improve the city in ways that even those who don't fly will benefit."
