Sonoma County airport installs solar energy system

In partnership with ForeFront Power, Sonoma County received a 963-kilowatt solar energy platform at the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (KSTS) and the county's Fleet Operations Building in Santa Rosa.ForeFront Power installed an 884-kilowatt solar canopy in the airport parking lot and a 79-kilowatt rooftop solar array at the Fleet building. The solar canopy, which features 2,010 solar modules, will be capable of generating enough renewable electricity that will offset 100% of the airport's yearly electrical demand.A Net Energy Metering provision will allow the airport to "bank" excess energy produced, which it can then tap into at night or on cloudy days, or whenever daily electricity demand exceeds the production by the solar energy system."Anything we can do to move our community toward a regenerative future is a priority right now," said James Gore, Sonoma County 4th District Supervisor James Gore. The two systems at the airport will generate over 1,495,500 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy per year, offsetting over 1,060 metric tons of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of removing 230 passenger vehicles from the road each year.
