  • Faced with the deadly threat of spring frosts, Ecocopter by Helisul is implementing an efficient aerial solution in Chile's central valleys. Using thermal inversion, their aircraft are protecting the most valuable grapevines, ensuring the future of the country's wine production, one of the most renowned in the world.

Santiago, Chile. As darkness envelops the central valleys and temperatures plummet across the Chilean countryside, a critical battle for the national economy unfolds in the silence of the early morning. A single night of sub-zero temperatures has the destructive power to burn new shoots, incinerate budding blossoms, and wipe out a year's worth of agricultural efforts in just a few hours.

For Chile's wine industry - an emblematic sector that in 2025 alone registered exports exceeding USD 1.523 billion - the threat transcends the monetary aspect, as it jeopardizes the international reputation of wines that lead the most demanding markets on the planet.

Faced with this challenge, vineyard protection has taken a qualitative leap, migrating from the ground to the skies. In this context, Ecocopter by Helisul has deployed its fleet in the main valleys of central Chile, transforming its helicopters into veritable "thermal shields" capable of protecting dozens of hectares of vineyards in a matter of minutes.

The science of air defense: physics and high-precision flight

The basis of this operation lies in the tactical exploitation of temperature inversions, a recurring meteorological phenomenon on calm, clear nights. While the air closest to the ground freezes destructively, a considerably warmer layer of air remains trapped at a low altitude.

Flying at low altitude and with pinpoint precision, the helicopters transform their blades and rotors into powerful dynamic fans. The blades draw in the mass of hot air above and forcefully project it toward the surface, mixing it with the ice layer and increasing the temperature in the most vulnerable part of the plant.

This heat flow is further enhanced by the residual heat generated by the aircraft's turbines, effectively breaking down the ice pack. "More than just providing a one-off service, we've integrated ourselves as a strategic partner of the agribusiness sector. With our fleet, we not only safeguard a high-value crop, but we also protect the excellence of Chilean wine abroad," states Francisco Arriagada, Commercial Manager of Ecocopter by Helisul.

In Chile, although winter is often perceived as the critical period, the most severe risk is concentrated in spring. It is during this budding and flowering phase that noble grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc have extremely sensitive tissue, where a late frost can be irreversible.

Thus, performing low-altitude nighttime maneuvers demands aeronautical preparation with no margin for error. To achieve this, Ecocopter by Helisul operates state-of-the-art aircraft, including the H145 and H125 B3 models, complemented by strict protocols. Key elements include detailed mapping of the terrain's topography and strategic illumination of obstacles and the perimeter; real-time temperature monitoring via sensors on the ground and in the cockpit; and expert pilots with specialized training in night and low-altitude flight.

"At Ecocopter by Helisul, the safety of our operations and crews is our absolute priority. Every procedure adheres to international aviation standards, giving our clients the assurance that their production will be protected under a controlled risk scheme," Arriagada emphasizes.

According to the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), between January and August 2026, Chilean wine production reached 949.5 million liters. This is good news, especially considering that, through this synergy between aeronautical engineering and agricultural vision, the valleys of central Chile are able to safeguard the value of their land. It is a testament to how technological innovation in aviation is working together to ensure that every glass served worldwide continues to bear the undisputed mark of quality that defines Chilean wine.
