Bell 429 vs. Airbus H145: speed and reach against cabin and payload

In 2017, W.R. "Bob" Dengler and his son Steven flew a Bell 429 around the world in 47 days, crossing 14 countries and earning the Guinness World Record for First Father and Son to Circumnavigate the World by Aircraft. The record has stood since. Two years later, in September 2019, a different twin-engine helicopter did something nothing in its class had ever done: the Airbus H145 landed on the 22,840-foot summit of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike Didier Delsalle's 2005 Everest landing in an H125, which required stripping the aircraft's passenger seats to save weight, the H145 needed no such compromise. Alexander Neuhaus, the Airbus Helicopters test pilot who flew it, said that as the H145 crossed the summit, it "still had power reserves that would have allowed us take two people on board." Despite sharing a similar rotor diameter and empty weight with the Bell 429, the H145 carries a military variant the Bell 429 lacks. It's also the newer design: Bell certified the 429 in 2009, five years before the H145 entered service in 2014. Given both the contrasts and similarities, how the two helicopters compare in between the lines is worth a closer look. Bell 429 and H145 target the same missions Bell and Airbus position the 429 and H145 in nearly identical customer segments. Both manufacturers emphasize cabin comfort and productivity for executive transport. Both the H145 and the Bell 429 continue to be used for patrol, surveillance, and rescue, with support for FLIR/EOS camera systems, searchlights, hoists, and NVG-compatible cockpits. The two helicopters also target oil-and-gas and offshore energy transport. They also perform general utility roles such as external cargo, aerial work, and support for operators maintaining public infrastructure. Both are explicitly built and marketed as multi-role, quick-reconfiguration platforms meant to move between corporate charter, medevac, law enforcement, energy, and utility duty with minimal modification. The H145 seats more passengers, has a larger cabin and higher takeoff weight The biggest gap between the two helicopters is the cabin size and number of passengers they can accommodate. The Bell 429 is capable of carrying up to seven passengers with a cabin volume of 130 cubic feet, while the H145 can accommodate ten and a cabin volume of 143 cubic feet. Perhaps this comes down to the fact that the H145's unobstructed cabin was specifically designed to meet the requirements set by medical regulatory agencies. The H145's cabin can be configured for one- or two-wheeled stretchers and fitted with either partial or comprehensive medical equipment, allowing three to five medical personnel to operate onboard. This means the H145 has multiple EMS cabin interiors, which were designed in cooperation with leading EMS providers based on HEMS customer feedback.This numerical advantage also means that for offshore wind operations, the H145 can accommodate two teams of three technicians with equipment. Further, the Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) variant of the H145 — the ACH145 — features "the most flexible cabin in its class" and can be configured with more than eight different layouts. The Airbus H145 also has a higher maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 8,157 lb, compared to the Bell 429's maximum gross weight of 8,000 lb with an external load. The Bell 429's standard internal gross weight is only 7,000 lb. This means the H145 can carry over 1,150 lb more weight than the Bell 429 in its base configuration. The Bell 429 counters with speed, range, and climb rate The Bell 429 is equipped with two Pratt andamp; Whitney Canada PW207D1/D2 turboshaft engines, each of which have a maximum continuous power of 610 shp (455 kW) and takeoff power rated at 719 shp (536 kW). The Airbus H145, on the other hand, uses two Safran Arriel 2E turboshaft engines, which deliver: Maximum continuous power: 828 shp per engine Maximum takeoff power: 894 shp per engine One engine inoperative (OEI) rating: 1,072 shp per engine Despite each H145 engine generating roughly 175 more takeoff shp than the Bell 429's, this power advantage does not translate into a greater speed for the H145. The Bell 429 has a maximum cruise speed of 155 knots (287 km/h), making it one of the faster helicopters in the light-twin class. The Airbus H145, on the other hand, has a recommended cruise speed of 130 knots, while having a never-exceed speed at 150 knots indicated airspeed. Advantage goes to the Bell 429, which is faster by around 25 knots at cruise. This gap means that in time-sensitive missions like emergency medical transport, the H145 would be able to accommodate more people in need of medical services than the Bell 429 would, but the H145 would not be able to transport those people as quickly. The H145's extra horsepower is offset by its higher weight, as the helicopter favors payload and hover performance over top speed. The Bell 429, by contrast, is a lighter airframe tuned for cruise speed over raw lifting power. This is why the Bell 429 also climbs significantly higher. It can climb 2,750 feet per minute at maximum gross weight, while the Airbus H145 climbs at a rate of 1,600 feet per minute. The Bell 429 flies roughly 20 nautical miles farther than the H145 on a single tank, with a range of 372 nautical miles at sea level under standard conditions at long-range cruise (standard maximum gross weight, standard fuel, no reserve), compared to the Airbus H145's maximum range of 351 nautical miles with standard fuel tanks, also at sea level under standard conditions. The Bell 429 also holds the endurance edgeWhile the Bell 429 may not have touched the top of Mount Aconcagua, it has a certified service ceiling of 20,000 feet, which is identical to the Airbus H145's ceiling. Perhaps if Bell ever sends the 429 after the tallest peak in the Southern Hemisphere, it would get there too. Bell also lists a maximum endurance of 4.5 hours for the 429, roughly one hour greater than the Airbus H145's. This makes the Bell 429 better suited to situations where a helicopter may need to loiter over an area for a long time, or at offshore hoist operations, where the aircraft holds position for extended periods. GlobalAir's own spec pages show a wider gap ($1,075.85/hr for the Bell 429 vs. $8,354/hr for the H145); the H145 figure there looks like a database error, the same as the passenger count did, and should be corrected separately. Why It MattersThe Bell 429 and Airbus H145 have different priorities. The 429 leans in on its speed, climb rate, and range that makes it more suitable for operators who need to move fast and cover a lot of ground. The H145 trades some of that performance for a bigger cabin and more seats. Capacity is its calling card. For a buyer choosing between the two, a look in the mirror for the mission at hand, is likely the best way to choose between these two capable platforms.
