Pilatus opens advanced composite center in major technology push
Pilatus has announced that it has officially opened its new advanced composite competence center in Nidwalden, Switzerland. This is the company's largest facility investment ever in a technology it expects to play a larger role in future aircraft. Why composites matter Composites are also known as fiber-reinforced materials. Pilatus states it has used them for over 40 years, but only for non-load-bearing secondary structures such as covers and cowlings. The PC-24 Super Versatile Jet deviates from this trend by having its load-bearing control surfaces made from composites. Pilatus plans to expand its use of composites because of their weight, durability, and design advantages, all of which can contribute to improved efficiency. The center is called the Schwarzhorn facility, after a Swiss mountain and the color of the composite components. It is the first time Pilatus has composite development and production under one roof and will provide a workspace for approximately 300 employees. The Schwarzhorn cost 100 million Swiss francs, the largest facility investment in company history. Pilatus says the building is designed to support future automation and advanced manufacturing technologies while strengthening collaboration between engineering and production teams. Building the next generation of manufacturing Aircraft manufacturers aren't just investing in products. They're investing in how those products will be built a decade from now on.
