SC Aviation buys Heartland, adding to an Upper Midwest charter roll-up

SC Aviation has bought Heartland Aviation, consolidating its private-lift position in the Upper Midwest. The seasoned Janesville, Wisconsin operator has been in business since 1946 and is a wholly owned affiliate of Colony Brands, which announced the deal on August 3. Eau Claire-based Heartland Aviation, no newcomer itself, has been running aircraft management, maintenance, and charter operations since 1961. SC Aviation says Heartland will keep its name and team while adding aircraft in the coming months.Owners and operators in western Wisconsin and the Minneapolis-St. Paul corridor won't feel much of a change, but a single larger operator holding ARGUS, WYVERN Wingman, and IS-BAO Stage 3 credentials carries some weight. SC Aviation's multi-certification is typically a strong draw for prospective corporate flight departments and charter brokers doing their due diligence.The financial muscle behind the acquisition is Monroe, Wisconsin-based Colony Brands — not exactly a household aviation name but instead the direct marketer behind The Swiss Colony, a century-old, family-owned, cheese-and-gifts juggernaut. Colony has expanded over the years through acquisition, and the deep-pocketed owner appears to be assisting SC Aviation in following a similar roadmap.Why it mattersManagement consolidation typically does not get the same kind of attention that a new business jet speed record does. But from a practical standpoint, it has a far greater impact on everyday operations. With one fewer independent in the region, all eyes are on management fees, which have a habit of rising without competition. The counterpoint being that one larger entity typically means more services. No matter how you slice it, the map of finding a place to base in Wisconsin and Minnesota just got a little smaller.
