Continental engines are coming home
After more than a decade under Chinese state ownership, Continental Aerospace Technologies is returning to U.S. hands. Arcline Investment Management, a private equity firm with an aerospace and defense dense portfolio, has agreed to acquire Continental from subsidiaries of Aviation Industry Corporation of China for approximately $535 million.
The deal brings one of general aviation's most popular piston engine manufacturers back under domestic ownership. Continental produces, prices, and supports engines found in thousands of Bonanzas, 210s, SR20s, and PA-34s.
Background
Continental was founded in Mobile, Alabama in 1905. It is a designer and manufacturer of both AvGas and Jet-A piston engines while also providing related aftermarket products and services for the general aviation market.
Aircraft that use the company's engine include:
Beechcraft Bonanza
Cessna 210
Cirrus SR20
Piper PA-34
And many others.
Arcline stated that Continental's technical capabilities, established customer base and reliable reputation makes it a perfect fit for its aerospace and defense systems and subsystems strategy. J.P. Morgan Securities LLC is serving as exclusive financial advisor, and Freshfields LLP is serving as legal advisor to Arcline in connection with the transaction.
What it means for general aviation
After many years under Chinese state ownership, there will be changes to how the company operates. Piston aircraft buyers, owners, and MRO providers should be aware that engines and parts prices will shift as production and service costs change to meet U.S. law. They should also keep an eye on Continental's policies and support, as it will be updated to Arcline's own policies. Arcline has not stated what will be changed in the transition, so it is unknown how this will affect parts supply or TBO policy. What's worth watching longer-term is whether Arcline moves to consolidate or expand the company's service network, a decision that could affect turnaround times and regional support for years to come
