Mexican Navy medical plane crashes in Galveston Bay in Texas
A Mexican Navy Beechcraft 350i (ANX-1209) that was operating as an air ambulance flight crashed into Galveston Bay in Texas on Monday.
The aircraft departed from the Mérida-Rejon Airport (MID) with 8 occupants and was attempting to land at the Galveston-Scholes Field (GLS). Heavy fog was reported in the area at the time of the crash, which could have potentially been the cause of the crash and has impacted search and rescue efforts. The police stated that the aircraft was submerged in about four to five feet of water, according to Chron.
Of the occupants, there are 2 known survivors, according to ASN. One of the victims was Federico Efraín Ramírez Cruz, a two-year-old pediatric burn patient, who was being transported to Shriners Children's Texas for treatment.
"It is with profound sadness that we learned of a child involved in a plane crash while being transported for burn care in Galveston this afternoon," said Shriners Children's Texas in a statement. "Shriners Children's Texas prides ourselves on caring for children from all over the world. Having not admitted this patient, we are unable to provide any information about their condition and kindly defer all future inquiries to the Mexican Navy, whose care the child was under when this unfortunate accident occurred."
Other known victims include Lieutenant Junior Grade Víctor Rafael Pérez Hernández, Lieutenant Junior Grade Juan Iván Zaragoza Flores, Seaman Guadalupe Flores Barranco and Dr. Juan Alfonso Adame González, according to KHOU 11 News. Another passenger, Lieutenant Junior Grade Luis Enrique Castillo Terrones, has not been found and is presumed dead.
Nurse Miriam de Jesús Rosas Mancilla and Julia Aracelis Cruz Vera survived the crash. One was rescued by resident Sky Decker on his neighbor's boat, and suffered from broken legs. The other had no injuries.
"We were out for a boat ride and we heard there was a plane crash, so we thought we'd go try to find it and help," said Decker to KHOU 11. "When I saw the wreckage, I couldn't imagine there would be anybody alive in there."
