Embraer completes Phenom 300E, Praetor 600 flight tests on 100% SAF
Embraer announced Sunday that it had successfully tested the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 on 100 percent neat sustainable aviation fuel. The tests were conducted using one engine running on 100 percent SAF, performed at Embraer's Melbourne facility and providing important insight into the systems' performance while using blends of up to 100 percent SAF. The fuel was provided y Wrld Fuel and the tests were a collaborative effort with engine and fuel system suppliers Honeywell Aerospace, Parker, Pratt andamp; Whitney Canada and Safran.
The tests are a step toward achieving the industry-wide goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 and Embraer's own goal of achieving net-zero by 2040. Using SAF is a crucial component of Embraer's commitment to sustainability. The testing is a testament to Embraer's ongoing commitment to going green by adapting current products to be more sustainable and promoting its adoption to customers and the industry. SAF is a renewable energy source that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent compared to traditional jet fuel. Alternative and sustainable fuels are a critical part of Embraer's targets to reach carbon-neutral operations by 2040 while supporting the aerospace sector to achieve its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.RELATED STORIES:Embraer reveals sustainable aircraft models as part of EnergiaEmbraer to use 100% renewable energy by 2024The testing utilized Honeywell's HTF7500 turbofan engine on the Praetor 600 aircraft, completing the first-ever flight on 100 percent SAF using a Honeywell business jet engine. "We are pleased to be creating a more sustainable future for aviation with industry leaders like Embraer," said Dave Marinick, president of engines and power systems at Honeywell Aerospace. "This testing milestone with our engine demonstrates the viability of SAF for Embraer and the overall aviation industry, as they work to meet carbon reduction commitments. Additionally, as we develop SAF solutions, we will be using these innovations in our own engines and APUs."
All of Embraer's aircraft are currently approved for the use of a blend of up to 50 percent SAF and conventional jet fuel, based on ASTM International specifications. The possible future specifications for allowing fuels with up to 100 percent SAF can increase the potential for emission reductions by using a sustainable, non-fossil-based source. Embraer is committed to sustainability as a core part of its business strategy.
Embraer is continuing to work toward a greener future for the industry. The company will move toward this goal with its additional efforts in research and development of low- and zero-emission alternative propulsion systems like electrification, hybrid-electric and hydrogen. The company is continually finding new ways to reduce its environmental impact and the recent flights on 100 percent neat SAF are a milestone in these ongoing efforts.
"We are proud to have successfully flown the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 on 100% neat SAF, an important step as our operators are increasingly interested in and adopting this fuel," Embraer Executive Jets President and CEO Michael Amalfitano said. "This achievement is an important milestone in our journey towards net-zero emissions by 2050 and demonstrates our commitment to sustainability, our customers and our stakeholders."
