Tecnam P2012 STOL nears certification
Tecnam announced on Tuesday that the P2012 STOL is on track to achieve EASA type certification by the end of 2023. The aircraft has been designed for Short Take Off and Landing operations and is specifically engineered to operate in some of the most challenging and demanding commercial airports in the world. the announcement was made on opening day of 2023 NBAA-BACE.All of the flight testing has confirmed or exceeded preliminary design performance data. The aircraft is already in production and first deliveries to customers are expected to begin in January. The P2021 addresses the needs of a niche market that has been underserved and underdeveloped for decades. Tecnam is providing a solution for operators looking for a sleek, spacious and comfortable aircraft. The new aircraft provides a safe and stylish option with incredible STOL performance capabilities.
The P2012 STOL is the only twin-piston aircraft with Short Takeoff and Landing capabilities to comply with certification changes. The STOL aircraft offers a maximum gross weight of 8,113 pounds while still maintaining a modern design and a comfortable, wide cabin with 11 seats. The interior has a central aisle, dedicated windows for each of the nine passengers, and has no bench or double seats. The aircraft has passenger amenities like USB ports, cabin air conditioning, individual fresh and hot air outlets, dedicated reading lights, seat pockets and cup holders. The interior design and view provided by the high-wing configuration provide customers with a best-in-class experience on flights for typical STOL destinations.
The new STOL aircraft has a modern cockpit with the latest technology including the G1000 NXi avionic system and GFC700 specifically tuned autopilot. The active and connected flight deck is equipped with Bluetooth, flight stream, Iridium and a slew of modern airs like Wx radar, storm scope, inset map and Synthetic Vision. The flight deck enhancements reduce pilot workload and fatigue as well as increase mission effectiveness. The new P2012 STOL also provides improved cabin comfort with a 34 percent wider cabin, 24 percent larger seat pitch, 188 percent higher luggage weight allowance and a 303 percent better luggage volume compared to most British STOL aircraft.
The P2012 STOL can comfortably carry the equivalent payload of most British STOL aircraft while still matching the takeoff and landing performance. The aircraft is able to outperform its useful load by 20 percent up to 2,830 pounds when performing a STOL mission. At its max takeoff weight, the takeoff run takes just 1,035 feet and just 1,395 feet to clear the obstacle and achieve takeoff distance. At the max landing weight, the landing distance from the obstacle takes just 1,180 feet and a ground run requires just 740 feet.
Regional and local STOL airports around the world need an aircraft like the P2012. These airports require an aircraft capable of lifting off from prepared and unprepared strips of less than 1,000 feet. The fully interchangeable twin-engine can quickly convert from a 9-passenger carrier into a special-purpose aircraft and back. Notably, the P2012 has a two-flight deck plus nine passenger single-seat configuration, two six-cylinder turbocharged piston engines, single pilot certified in VFR and IFR, PBN certification for GPS approaches, no type rating concern or renewal requirement, and easy maintenance.
