What started as a small fly-in at the Curtis-Wright Airport in Milwaukee in September 1953 has grown into one of the biggest aviation events in the world. For the first event, 21 aircraft and 150 people gathered to celebrate aviation. In 1956 the event moved to Oshkosh, then Rockford, Illinois in 1959. The convention has been held at the Fly-In Convention Grounds, located near the Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh since 1970, and was renamed to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 1988. From just 21 aircraft and 150 people, AirVenture has grown to host over 10,000 aircraft and more than 600,000 people.
To some attendees, AirVenture is like an aviation family reunion. Many people have met and reunited on the Fly-In Grounds over the years. The interactive event features, food, drinks, shipping, day and night airshows, movies, presentations, hands-on training and most importantly, aircraft new and old. There is fun for all ages, which is why so many aviation fans attend over the years, growing from sharing the tradition with their family to sharing it with families of their own.RELATED STORIES:A look at EAA AirVenture 2023's record-breaking numbersFuel deals from over 50 FBOs, airshow schedule - everything you need for AirVentureA first-timers guide to AirVenture

Pelton said. "We also realize that AirVenture's dates affect the scheduling of many other aviation events, as well as other activities in Wisconsin, so it's important to have these dates finalized."
