John Travolta adds another license to his growing pilot resume

It's easy to look at 68-year-old actor John Travolta and picture the slicked-back hair of Danny Zuko or the bolo tie courtesy of Vincent Vega. So it might come as a surprise to say that Travolta's favorite place to be is not in front of a camera, but in the pilot's seat of one of his many aircraft."When I was 15 years old, my school offered an aviation class, which started my second career," Travolta captioned a throwback shot in May 2020. John Travolta once said that his acting funds his passion for aviation. And after earning his private pilot's license at 22, it comes as no surprise that his filmography would be nearly as long as his pilot's resume.Travolta holds a whopping 12 type ratings, ranging from small military aircraft to airliners. While the iconic actor hasn't appeared on screen since 2020, he's been keeping busy expanding his pilot skills, recently receiving certification to fly a Boeing 737."A very proud moment in aviation history," he stated in a 15-second video. "To add to my 747 and 707 licenses, I just receive my 737 licenses and it went very well."We know that Travolta eats, sleeps, and breathes aviation. But he takes his passion one step further by living on an airport with his own runway and taxiway. His late wife Kelly Preston shared a look inside their aviation-themed home in Ocala, Florida back in 2004. While one of many homes owned by the Travoltas, it is the only one with a 7,500-foot runway in the backyard. The home is situated at Jumbolair Airport and features two outbuildings to provide covered access to aircraft."It was always John's dream to have planes in his front yard -- to practically be able to pull up to the house -- so that when you wanted to go to dinner, all you'd have to do was step out the door, get on the plane, and whisk off," Preston told Architectural Digest.A Gulfstream II jet is parked in one of two plane pavilions. Although the property came equipped with a 7,500-foot runway, Travolta extended the taxiway to reach the house. / Architectural DigestIt is hard to pin down exactly how many aircraft Travolta owns at any given time. He at least owns a Boeing 707, Challenger 601, 2007 Eclipse EA500, and two Gulfstream jets. The Boeing 707 is Travolta's most famous aircraft, being that it is an ex-Qantas Airlines quadjet airliner. The aircraft is named Jett Clipper Ella, a tribute to his late son Jett and daughter Ella Bleu.John Travolta in cockpit of Boeing 707 in 2002.
