Rolls-Royce's all-electric aircraft, 'Spirit of Innovation', has successfully completed its first flight in an attempt to break the current world record for an electric flight speed. While the record stands at 210mph, Rolls-Royce expects the Spirit of Innovation to reach more than 300 miles per hour later this year. The aircraft flew for 15 minutes after taking off from the UK Ministry of Defence's Boscombe Down site. The company said the 400kW electric powertrain is equivalent to 500 horsepower and features a power-dense battery pack. The aircraft is being tested for more than just a world-record attempt. Warren East, CEO of Rolls-Royce, said that the program's battery and propulsion technology could help make 'jet zero' a reality.
