Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) is an annual celebration of educating and empowering young women about opportunities to be part of the aviation industry. The 2021 event, held this past Saturday, was hosted by Sheltair Aviation and Women in Aviation International (WAI) at Tampa International Airport (TPA). Girls in Aviation Day welcomed over 100 attendees and more than 40 volunteers. The event provided the future generators of aviators a unique opportunity to come face-to-face with aircraft and their crews. A diverse onsite static display included aircraft like the Cessna 172, Cessna 310, Icon A5, and two helicopters. The TPA Airport Rescue, Firefighting, and Police units showcased their equipment as well as the furry members of their K9 team.Attendees were also able to experience hands-on education activities throughout the day like a craft table to create custom aviation-themed jewelry. Members of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) helped teach about its integral role in meteorological forecasting while showing off its storm tracking equipment. "As a woman in aviation, I'm honored to be in a position where I can help inspire young women in their path to becoming the aviation industry's future," said Lisa Holland, President of Sheltair Aviation. "It is important that we continue to support upcoming generations in our communities by representing them and providing viable options."
